General information

During the last decades outcome and treatment of children with cancer has improved dramatically. The success was possible because:

  • national cancer registries were established
  • children with cancer were enrolled in prospective, randomised trials
  • interdisciplinary collaboration of Healthcare professionals and researcher and
  • international collaboration was getting a standard in the management of children with cancer

These mechanisms helped to increase the overall survival from 54% (1978-1982) to about 80 % today. Today we recognize that the incidence of childhood cancer is increasing throughout Europe: The average annual percentage change is about 1.1%. The increased incidence can not be explained by an increased registration rate only. Other factors like change of lifestyle and exposure to a variety of agents might also contribute to this phenomenon.

To proceed with the success story of childhood cancer treatments has to be done in prospective trials that are multi-centred and international designed. These trials have to include molecular genetic findings for a better stratification of patients. Today it is time to use all data related to one patient with cancer, integrate them and analyse them with modern methods of informatics to fight cancer in a more individualized way as ACGT proposes. Personalized medicine will become a reality in this respect.
